Vermillion Community Food Pantry
The Vermillion Food Pantry (1) coordinates access to food and other supplies at a time of critical need, and (2) provides 7-10 days worth of supplies to low-income or moderate-income individuals and families of Clay County, South Dakota, regardless of race, sex, age, or religious creed. The Vermillion Food Pantry was founded in 1984. It was a very small operation, with one person filling food sacks and one person giving out the food sacks in Trinity Lutheran Church’s kitchen. That year, we fed 34 people. In 1998, the VFP became a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation. Through the years, we have continued to grow. In fact, the Vermillion Food Pantry provided food to 8,799 people in Clay County in 2018.To better serve our guests, the Vermillion Food Pantry transitioned to a client-choice pantry in October of 2014. Our guest can now enjoy a grocery store setting, where they can choose foods that fit with their health and dietary needs, as well as what is currently in their cupboards. This gives our guest a greater sense of control.
