Project CAR (Call A Ride)
Project CAR, a non-profit agency, provides shared transportation for adults in Sioux Falls, SD who are referred by supporting organizations. Project CAR uses volunteer drivers to provide rides for doctor, dental, vision care and mental health appointments as well as physical and rehabilitation therapies. Transporting people to Active Generations Day Break Adult Services, LifeScape job sites, and volunteer assignments through the Helpline Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Senior Companion Program of South Dakota. Rides are also provided for worship services and church activities. There is no charge to the passengers. Project CAR is an example of a successful coordinated partnership with agencies and churches providing affordable transportation. Most passengers are low income, seniors, people with special needs and others who have no access to transportation. Each year Project CAR travel over 70,000 miles, providing over 10,000 rides. Twenty percent of the rides are for health care. Volunteer drivers give over 7,000 hours to this program.
